Aj Halkes shot his first reel of film when he was six years old and was then taught by his father in Singapore, after staging his first solo exhibition in 1974 at 17 years he made Hong Kong his home in 1976. A pioneer in 3D imaging and holography in Asia in the 80s his career includes watch industry patents and a RedDot Industrial Design award, he has remained in the creative world of product and imaging for decades. The Hong Kong 3D anaglyph collection represents a memento of his home city and is part of an extensive collection of unique and historic moments and locations. This unique collection of anaglyphs will be released in phases.
Capturing iconic Hong Kong locations and sights, mostly long gone, the viewer of a Hong Kong Anaglyph travels back in time as they stand exactly where the moment was captured and experiences it through their own eyes, in full 3D, via epic immersive stereo images from an analogue film era; all made possible by new digital techniques and vibrant output using Archival inks.
Each edition from a single “stereo pair” of transparencies is limited to 950 pieces together with 45 artist proofs after which no more images will be reproduced from that pair and prices will be adjusted as editions sell out.
In the event unique sizes or formats other than those on offer are desired please contact:
THE HONG KONG 3D ANAGLYPH COLLECTION
The Hong Kong 3D anaglyphs represent a total re-contextualization by AjHalkes of his 1980s “Hong Kong Tour”, originally conceived for sale at tourist locations throughout Hong Kong and made in cooperation with ViewMaster of Portland Oregon.
The stereo images were captured as 35mm film transparencies via a double Nikon SLR camera rig or Verascope F40 stereo camera (manufactured in the 1950s); these delicate film captures have now been painstakingly repaired and digitized from original reels into unique large scale anaglyphs. Though a format popular in the 50s and 60s for movies the use of the anaglyph in large scale artwork has seldom been attempted and is now available exclusively from HalkesGalleries in a series of limited edition fine art prints; made possible by technology that has permitted formatting and delicate tuning of the images for maximum effect.
